How many folks does it take to sail an aircraft carrier?

A little behind = comfortably behind
Some of us mock end users lack of awareness or make assumptions about what people know versus what they don’t. Once you roll your sleeves up and show them that it’s just not that complicated they become converts and bring others along the way. It can be empowering to save people time, money and help them reach out to others.
Too many folks are being left behind.

The Curve
This is the time of year when we can ask our bosses and co-workers for the support (financial or political) to meet the goals for the coming year. Have you always been honest with superiors and co-workers during the evaluation process or has there been a cloud of salary fear? If you said yes maybe this is the time to change that. It has been my experience that honesty and frankness can aggravate initially, but if you stay true to that message it can pay dividends in the future.
This economic time with salaries frozen might be a great opportunity to get over the concern about what effect honesty will have on a salary change! It might help the office and yourself move along the curve!
Don't fear the change in salary, love the change in how you do business! This will have the greatest impact on how others view you and your ideas.

Replacing the day 1 binder
- Benefits/HR Policies - Consider removing lastupdate stamp
- Departmental Procedures - DITTO
- ERP Manual - Prior owner lost all the college specific info
- CRM Manual - It was a version behind
For one of binder they actually handed me a manila envelope with replacement pages and an instruction sheet for replacing them myself.
Thinking about this today it hit me. We all want to communicate with our external constituents better and in a more technology savvy methods. Are some of these day 1 binders a test case for new technologies?
To worried about features for those on the outside, I didn't realize the potential inside. From wikis to RSS feeds, even social networking. Here is an example if you work on a system of any type you most likely have a book mark list of trusty sources for when your in a pinch. Would those same sites help the guy or gal in the cube next to you? Mine would and I'm not sharing those on delicious or digg, but you can find the most recent Fark.com story I read.
What new technology test bed is sitting on that bookshelf beside you that could kick start a learning experiment on social media and knowledge sharing practices for your office?

1 Goal = 1 system or 1 integrated operation

ERP, CRM, CMS, LMS...What does this acronym alphabet mean for integration and sharing of knowledge?

Remember Google!

Did you know that burried within Google's search algorithim is the always tweaked variable of Page Rank, based on the votes or links around the web for specific content. So if you googled a term today and then googled it again tomorrow you have done an analysis on the growth of that topic. We can each spend hours doign analysis of every variable that might affect the success of a campaign or the likleyhood of a student enrolling. But does the answer always neeed to be arrived at from scratch?
Why is this important? Well next time you are assigned to generate a report or start a strategy! It's an easy way to listen to others before you share! And there are alot of others out there now to help guide!

$1.00
Nothing like bringing the change bucket and being the first one to throw in a $1.oo. I was stuck in the past with yesterday's post. So I owe the first $1.oo. Higher-ed is a passionate business. from a counselor, to faculty, and even folks in institutional research all have a a personal interest in the success of a college or university. So how do we move forward?
Well, I found myself reading Ray Ulmer's post where he asked one simple question "Raise your hands if you're in sales". Would you have raised your hand no matter if you are a recruiter, analyst, or professor? With so many choices for good students how do you survive as an institution if you don't make the connection as Ray did?

Charge the toll to change
"They will come here because we are ________, and they have come before"
That is most likely coming from the staff member that always dwells in the past. Sorry, but the bubble has burst. We have sat and watched as large college and universities have developed their brand, learned technology, and built relationships with students as if they were a small private liberal arts college. Now it is time to play catch up!
These schools and their pioneering staff paid a price for being first and now smaller schools and their staff (like me) are paying the price to catch up. It is time to put the bucket in the middle of the conference table and discuss changing. If you dwell in the past pay your dollar or make room for someone else at the table.
The Program was a great football movie and the craziest player had a desire to play so he paid the price and got a place at the table. Sure the steriods might be a little much, but tenure can be a tough egg to crack.
I want a place at the table and if you are reading this you probably do to!
